When is a cigar more than just a cigar?

wallyI had one helluva birthday celebration last week.

My pals Dave and Steve treated me to a smoke at Vendetta, a seller of men’s clothing and accessories and fine cigars that’s hidden off the lobby of The Fairmont Hotel on San Francisco’s Nob Hill.

We squeezed into the shop’s tiny smoking room. Bruce, the owner, poured us snifters of complimentary, 12-year, Nicaraguan rum. And then we fired up our ceegars.

But these weren’t just everyday stogies.

They were 1954, Cuban, pre-Castro, Flor de Farach, Brevitas cigars. These little gems were hand-rolled seven years before JFK imposed the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba in 1962.

There aren’t many pre-embargo Cuban cigars on the market, so they’re pricey. These were $125-a-stick pricey. (Yes, Dave and Steve are VERY good friends.)

So how was the experience?

Let’s see…

Three dudes lounging in a grand 108-year-old San Francisco hotel, drinking 12-year-old rum, and smoking 60-year-old Cuban cigars.

Yeah, it was a pretty spectacular time.

But you can’t make memories like that unless you’ve freed up time to make ’em.

So whatcha gonna do?
