Last Friday night, I was wheeling down our street and getting ready to make a left turn into our driveway when Deb let out a laugh.
Our neighbors across the street and three doors down are displaying the famous “leg lamp” from the movie A Christmas Story in the upstairs window of their wonderful Victorian-style house.
There it stands, the spittin’ image of Darren McGavin’s fra-gee-lay prize — a full-scale leg lamp, beautifully and brightly framed in the window. It shines like a winter beacon on our otherwise dark street.
Gorgeous.
You see all sorts of oddball home Christmas displays these days…
The neighbor with an enormous Merlin the Magician in the front yard. The sinister Santa. The squatting Rudolph.
But I think the McGavin leg lamp is really something special.
First of all, believe it or not, there are a lotta people who just aren’t going to “get it.”
I know, I know. It seems impossible. But after 31 years, some people have STILL not seen the classic A Christmas Story. Go figger.
Second of all, in a world where married couples divorce over the issue of incandescent versus LED Christmas bulbs, only a very unique twosome could possibly agree on displaying a leg lamp.
Third…let’s face it. A leg lamp is freakin’ AWESOME!
