I can’t balance a checkbook to save my life

670px-Balance-a-Checkbook-Step-7We’re finally seeing some rain here in California.

As everybody knows — because the media loves a crisis — we’ve suffered drought conditions for the last few years.

But we had a good downpour yesterday.

“It’s been so long since I drove in the rain,” my friend Carrie told me this morning, “I couldn’t remember how to turn my windshield wipers from intermittent to continual.”

And that got me thinking about how many things we’re forgetting how to do, just because we don’t need to remember how to do ’em anymore.

Like read a map, for instance. I used to live and die by maps to find my way around. Now, I type addresses into my GPS and wait for directions.

I don’t have to recall phone numbers anymore; my iPhone does that.

I don’t need to balance my checkbook — there’s an app for that — and frankly, I can pretty much avoid doing math altogether.

When daylight savings time rolls around, every clock in my house, in my car, or on my phone changes automatically. These days, I couldn’t manually change the time on a clock if my life depended on it.

To be honest, I don’t miss any of those skills. I can live comfortably without them.

But there are skills that I want to keep sharp. And I’d suggest you keep them sharp, too.

Those are the skills that involve aligning your thoughts, feelings, and actions so you can successfully move forward to total satisfaction in your life.

Here’s how I’ve personally been honing those skills recently…
